Top Tips For Renovating This Autumn

Last Updated on December 15, 2023 by Jason Nguyen

Autumn can be a fantastic time to undertake some home renovations, with the busyness of summer slowing down but the craziness of Christmas not having begun.

Whether it’s a large project you’ve been putting off or a smaller project you only recently decided on, here are some top tips for a smooth renovation.

Create a comprehensive plan

Whilst it can be easy to dive straight into a renovation project, but it is advisable to start with a plan. Firstly, break down the renovation into stages and plan how long each one is going to take, this will provide a good indication of the timeframe for the project.

Cross-reference this with your calendar to see where the renovation can fit in around existing commitments and where you may need to move things around.

It is also useful to consider which elements of the project you are planning to do yourself versus anything you are looking to be completed by a professional.

Set a budget

Creating a plan and establishing a budget go hand in hand and should be done simultaneously. Before you start the project, consider how much you can afford to spend.

From here you can establish where you are willing to spend more money compared to where you would like to try and save. Be sure to do some research here as certain parts of a renovation are always worth investing in.

Create a master shopping list for everything you will need to purchase, this will be useful for discovering where you are going to be spending the most money.

Explore all options

Now that you have planned the project, it is time to look more into the detail. This is where it is good to explore all your options to ensure the best possible end result.

Be sure to delve into Pinterest, speak to family and friends, and visit showrooms to glean as much inspiration as possible.

Visiting, for example, a bathroom showroom, is a great way to see products in person and establish what it is that you really like, as well as what you aren’t so keen on.

Let your neighbors know

Depending on the scale of your project, there is a chance that you may be making considerable noise. If this is the case, then be sure to give your neighbors a heads up so they are aware of when it will be happening and how long they can anticipate the disturbance.

Take your time

As previously mentioned, renovations are exciting, and it can be very tempting to get stuck in. But, in order to complete the project to the highest standard possible, it is important not to rush anything. If the best builder isn’t available for 6 weeks, then wait the 6 weeks, if the tiles you wanted are out of stock then wait for them to come back in stock. Don’t stray from your decisions just because things may take longer than you were hoping for.
